Let this be a lesson to all bands: A reality tv show is a great (expensive) way to generate publicity for a band.
Take the Pussy Cat Dolls. With a lead singer and 5 backup dancer-singers, the last thing they need is yet another band member…but voila, enter CW’s Pussy Cad Dolls Present: Search for the Next Doll. It’s sort of a cross between Making of the Band (featuring Danity Kane) and Girls Next Door (featuring Playboy’s Heffner’s mistresses); i.e. hot, lingerie-wearing girls that sing and dance.
In tonight’s finale episode, Asia Nitollano out-sang and out-danced Chelsea Korka and Melissa Reyes to become the next Doll. Chelsea sang like Christina Aguilara but couldn’t dance (relatively speaking), Melissa was hot, and Asia did it all. Congrats, Asia’s the winner.
So, did group founder Robin Antin get the exposure she was looking for? It’s hard to say. Except for a small spike in the Pussy Cat Dolls’ official website, there doesn’t seem to be much of a change in web traffic. However, it will be more interesting to see how their second album, Double the Trouble, sells. Danity Kane sold the crap out of their single with zero marketing effort (not including 3 seasons of reality TV, of course).
For those of you who need more PCD stuff, you can also check out Next Pussy Cat Doll pictures, Season 2 audition applications (ANOTHER member? yeesh), or rediculous Pussy Cat Doll lyrics. There’s no end to the madness.
By the way, back to the first line of this post: hey indie bands, seriously consider creating a video series on YouTube following your band. Create an original idea that’s entertaining, and you may have something worth watching and following. Believe it or not, there’s probably a lesson here somewhere…beyond thigh highs and corsets…though said clothing can be fairly distracting from any such lesson…
