Today’s post was randomly written by Larry Mitchell (though I doubt he’s the actual offer) of Mixonic, a CD duplication service based in San Francisco. It was sent to me out of the blue by some made-up Public Relations rep named Katie. Normally, I ignore such requests, but the article was decent enough, so I’m “allowing” it, with some grammar corrections (at least 20 commas added, for example) and my own cynical comments added for your and my enjoyment :). (Some companies pay for something like this…I guess my being a musician makes me a sucker for non-paying gigs…) Without further ado — take it away, Larry! A completed music CD is something to be proud of. Go ahead and shout about it. [Mike: Woohoo! Oh wait…I haven’t finished my CD yet. Shoot.] No one but you knows the work that went into its making, and no one but you can work to assure its success in the music marketplace. One of the ways to market and sell your CD is through Social Networking. Many people use social networks such as Myspace, Facebook, or Twitter to keep in touch with their friends, but these meeting places are excellent tools for sales as well. The key to success with marketing your CDs on Social Networks is to avoid overkill. [Mike: I’m not sure that’s the “KEY” to success, but it’s certainly a potential downfall.] You never want to flood your friends with your sales pitches. You have to be discreet, innovative, even funny at times, to get their interest and make your pitch as a part of the normal course of who you are; a musician with a CD for sale. [Mike: That’s all we are…CD salesmen? Ouch. Someone shoot me, please.] Pick a day to make your sales pitch. A lot of the social networks allow you to link them together so that, for example, if you twitter tweet [Mike: Do not profess to be a social networking guru if you use “Twitter” as a verb instead of “Tweet”] a pitch it shows up on your FaceBook and Myspace page, so that you will only have to post once for all three sites. Work on your presentation keeping concise. [Mike: Or, to put it more concisely: “Keep your pitch short.”] You want something that will be memorable, catchy, even so that when it comes time each week for your regular promotion, they will look forward to reading what you have to say and be inspired to buy your CD. [Mike: I’m not sure any fan would ever look forward to a weekly sales pitch…] In addition to these regular promotions you can also run specials. Sell your CD at a discount, or give volume pricing, have contests and giveaways. You want to be able to keep those CDs flowing out the door. [Mike: You’re more likely to have fans running out the door.] Also make sure you have enough CDs on hand to support all of your promotions. [Mike: Aren’t CDs “dead” or something?] In terms of sending out your CDs via Social Networks you can either direct them to an online, or retail store source for your CDs, or sell them outright. If you sell your CDs out of your garage, for example, offer a free card or sell a signed poster as well to add some excitement to your CD sales. [Mike: well, that’s not really “sending out your CDs via Social Networks” then, is it?] Social Networking invites your active participation, meaning, you have to be there in order to connect with your friends and fans. Establishing your presence on these sites is a great way to tie into your CD sales promotions. After all, people will expect you to promote your CD, so you will not be coming at them sight unseen. Online blogs on MySpace or message boards on Facebook connect you directly with the people who are your customers. Make them want to get to know you, and then it is an easy step to get to know you better by buying your CD. Connections, connections, connections! You have to love it! They will too when they buy your CD! [Mike: Grammar, grammar, grammar! You have to love it! Fortunately, Mixonic isn’t selling an English language tutoring service. I’m hoping that by posting this, Mixonic will appreciate my attempts to improve upon its article, and offer a free mastering and mixing session. If you think of any other worthy additions, please share below!]]]>
