BMI, a major public performance rights-licensing agency, is entering the world of podcasting. The company announced that it will release a series of podcasts called “See It Hear First” that feature unsigned artists and target the music industry’s A&R departments. Initial podcasts will be available on BMI’s Web site and distributed though email. “See It Hear First” is one piece of BMI’s strategy regarding podcasts. The company recently unveiled a blanket licensing scheme for public performance podcasts, offering one piece of an overall licensing solution. BMI SVP of Writer/Publisher Relations Phil Graham told Digital Music News “The podcast is a logical next step.” With WCKG host Steve Dahl’s recent podcast cancellation Chicago, and so many other organizations’ hesitancy to join the fray, it’s great to see a central music rights agency take an atypical stance and embrace a new technology.
